Telecom survivor's big move

About a year after they thought they might be a casualty of the tech bust, folks at Arsenal Digital Solutions are in new offices and say they might be in the clear.

The company provides data storage and retrieval services for the customers of big telecoms such as AT&T and Verio. But the big telecoms started in the data storage business when the market was flooded with venture-backed upstarts. Now, many of the upstarts have gone bankrupt and the big telecoms have an easier time sending business Arsenal Digital's way.

Bill Sandridge with MetaPartners helped move the company from 13,000 square feet of temporary space subleased from BuildNet at Imperial Center to 17,000 square feet subleased from Level 8 software in Regency Park.

Arsenal Digital got a big boost at the end of last year from $24 million in venture capital -- the biggest round in a meager year of funding.

Steven Horan, chief financial officer, said rent was cheaper at 8000 Regency than other buildings his company looked at and that Arsenal has the option of building a network operations center there. Since the end of last year, the company has hired about 10 people, bringing its work force to 70.

Commercial real-estate firms keep moving toward specialization. Two-year-old Momentum Group -- formerly Interior Options -- focuses on finding and outfitting office space for doctor and dental groups.

President Terry Espy says her company has built up a roster of doctor and dental clients but will work with anyone needing a change in office space.

Espy flies to conventions all over the country to speak to doctors and dentists about real-estate planning and to make contacts with equipment vendors. Last week, she was in Chicago for a meeting of dentists and she has been invited to a meeting of the American Medical Association in Washington later this year.

Capital Associates is talking to doctor groups to prelease space in a 106,000-square-foot building planned for Lake Boone Trail. Though Capital conceived of the building strictly for office users, doctor groups may be the strongest tenants near Rex Hospital.

But Capital's Tom Huff says construction depends on the market. "We're waiting to get a whole lot of preleasing before we start," he said.
