Herman Miller has announced that Michael
Volkema, 48, will step down as chief executive
officer. He will continue to serve as chairman of
the company's board. Volkema will be replaced by
Brian C. Walker , an executive vice president and
the chief financial officer of Herman Miller since 1996.
In his new position, he will oversee all of Herman Miller's
core business operations for the U.S. and Canada.
Walker, 37, is a graduate of Michigan State University
and a certified public accountant who worked for the
accounting firm of Arthur Andersen before joining Herman
Miller in 1988. Walker serves on the board of directors for
Brown Corporation, a privately held supplier to the Big
Three auto manufacturers. Walker also is a board member of
In-Roads, a national organization dedicated to the
advancement of college-level minority students. He, his
wife, and their three children reside in Holland, Michigan.
Terry Espy, President of Momentum Group,
a full-service facilities consulting group, has announced
that Laszlo Zala has joined the firm as
vice president of operations. In this position, Zala will be
responsible for streamlining operations and providing the
necessary structure for the company to grow. Zala, an
alumnus of Cleveland State University's engineering program,
most recently worked at a management consulting firm in
Chicago.
Conrad Imports, creators of handwoven
window coverings, has announced that Carol Bertao has
been promoted from vice president of sales and product
development to C.E.O . of the company.
Watkins Hamilton Ross Architects
has opened a new office in Dallas, which is
being managed by architect Chuck Turner. Turner has more
than 30 years of experience as an architect with extensive
experience in the design of healthcare facilities. In
addition to managing the new office, Turner will also serve
as a senior project manager. He holds a Bachelor of
Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin and is
actively involved in the American Institute of Architects (AIA),
the Texas Society of Architects, National Council of
Architectural Registration Boards and the AIA Academy of
Architecture for Health.
Bill Maguire joins Susman
Tisdale Gayle as senior designer for the firm's
Interiors Studio. As such, he will be responsible for design
direction, project schedules and cost tracking as well as
client relations and quality control. Maguire has more
than 25 years of experience in interior design of diverse
global projects for corporate offices, financial services
and entertainment and retail clients. He earned his Bachelor
of Environmental Design degree from the Pratt Institute in
Brooklyn, New York.
